Disposable products and integrated waste management

Absorbent hygiene products (AHP) play a very important part in handling incontinence disorders. Wearer comfort, absorbency, kindness to the skin and hygienic qualities are fundamental to product design. In addition, it must be possible to dispose of the products easily and without placing too much strain on the environment – a challenge that we have taken very seriously.

Supporting safe disposal concepts

A permanent feature of the
development of disposable
HARTMANN products:
guaranteeing suitable
disposal concepts
We feel that it is our duty as a manufacturer of absorbent hygiene products to make it easier for both users and the waste disposal industry to dispose of our products safely and without unnecessarily burdening the environment. Accordingly, we think about disposal options for our products from the outset, and one of our development tasks is to ensure compatibility with all current disposal concepts. Because of the materials used in hygiene products we favour integrated waste management systems. Their great energy efficiency also means that our absorbent hygiene products make a particularly great contribution to energy recovery. We are also committed to the “bag it and bin it” campaigns aimed at preventing hygiene product waste from ending up in the sewers.

HILMAS – saving resources through tailored product selection

HILMAS helps to avoid
unnecessary strains on
the environment due to the
wrong choice of product.
The current version 4.0
contains lots of new,
practical functions
A study conducted by HARTMANN revealed that in practice, the sizes of incontinence products used are often either too big or too small. From an ecological viewpoint, too, this is not right. If the products are too large for the incontinence requirement in question this is a waste of materials and ultimately of raw materials, and if the products are too small they need to be changed unnecessarily often, creating more waste.
With HILMAS (HARTMANN Incontinence Logistic Management and Assessment System) we offer old people’s homes, nursing homes and psychiatric clinics free software, enabling them to draw up optimum care schedules. It helps the management to optimize costs and avoid choosing the wrong product and thus placing an unnecessary strain on the environment.

Recall campaign for mercury thermometers

A safe and environmentally
friendly alternative to
conventional mercury
thermometers:
HARTMANN’s ThermoVal
electronic thermometers
Mercury is extremely toxic and thus a dangerous environmental poison. Crushing mercury thermometers consequently represents a serious health threat to users. Which is why, together with pharmacies, medical product suppliers and S-plus Umweltservice GmbH, we launched a nationwide initiative in Germany to dispose of old mercury thermometers professionally and in an environmentally-friendly way. Eco-friendly electronic thermometers were sold and in return, used thermometers containing mercury taken back at no extra cost.
