The care of incontinent patients

Persons in need of care who suffer from incontinence can be helped in many different ways. Apart from treatment of underlying diseases, care methods and aids decisively improve the situation of the persons affected.

Condom urinal systems

Condom urinals collect the
urine and store it
Condom urinal systems, which collect the urine by means of special condom urinals, drain it via hose connections and store it in urine drainage bags, are suitable for urine drainage in men.

Intermittent autocatheterism

Indwelling catheters for the care of incontinence sufferers are regarded only as exceptional solutions. They are used almost only for in-patient care and as a provisional solution.

In recent years intermittent autocatheterism has become increasingly important particularly for patients suffering from paraplegia or spinal cord injuries. It is a long-term treatment which can be learned by the patient or by his relatives. Instruction is carried out under medical supervision.

Absorbent incontinence products

Incontinence briefs
enable an active life
Absorbent incontinence products for disposable use enable not only safe, inconspicuous and hygienic disposal of urine and feces. They also help to prevent skin diseases.

If the patient is still completely or partially mobile, the incontinence product must be designed so that he or she feels absolutely secure with it. This is important because it enables the patient to remain mobile and retain the stimulating influences of an active lifestyle which are so essential for staying healthy or for limiting further degeneration processes particularly in old age.

All products which are worn directly on the body are suitable for mobile patients: all-in-one incontinence briefs and incontinence pads in different types and absorption strengths.

In bedridden patients the problem of reliable skin protection is the main medical issue. Frequent changing of the pads is an essential care measure particularly when fecal incontinence also exists. For this reason incontinence products are also prescribable in many cases.

For the selection of the right incontinence product, the classification of the approximate volume of released urine into four degrees of severity has proven to be helpful. The absorption strength of the individual incontinence products is respectively dimensioned according to this:

  • Slight incontinence: urine loss within 4 hours of approx. 50 to 100 ml

  • Moderate incontinence: urine loss within 4 hours of approx. 100 to 200 ml

  • Severe incontinence: urine loss within 4 hours of approx. 200 to 300 ml

  • Very severe incontinence: urine loss within 4 hours of more than 300 ml
