Argentiferous wound dressings are a tried and test method of reducing the risk of infection of wounds. In addition it is necessary to avoid cytotoxic effects on the wound itself.

The bactericidal effect of Atrauman Ag was tested in extensive micro-biological in vitro tests according to standardized test procedures. The laboratory tests confirm a fast and long-lasting effect of the argentiferous ointment dressing on a wide range of bacteria. Because Atrauman Ag delivers silver ions only to the immediate surroundings of the wound dressing, the antiseptic effect on the wound dressing as well as the wound surface is limited. Only very small concentrations of silver ions enter the wound itself. Therefore its cytotoxicity is comparatively low, i.e. the vitality of the cells during wound treatment is only slightly impaired.
