Electricity accidents

Electricity accidents often happen through the careless use of electrical appliances such as unskilled repair work off one’s own bat.

Here, merely accidents at home involving low voltage (below 1000 volts) are meant.

In the event of an electricity accident at home

– interrupt electrical circuit
Heed your own safety in the process at all events! Under no circumstances must you yourself get caught in the circuit of the injured person, as you will no longer be able to help. The easiest way to interrupt the electricity supply is to pull out the plug or turn off the mains fuse. If neither is immediately possible, separate the casualty from the electricity source with a non-conducting object, e.g. a wooden broom handle. Make sure that you safeguard yourself by standing on dry clothes or a telephone book, for example.

- Observation/check
After saving the person in trouble, check his/her breathing and pulse immediately.

- Emergency measures
Eventually administer life-saving emergency measures (artificial respiration, resuscitation, stable side position).
These measures are to be given priority and are more important than treating eventual burn injuries (cooling and bandaging).

- Notify the ambulance service

- Medical observation
As the effects of an electricity accident such as respiratory arrest or cardiac dysrhythmias can also appear several hours later, medical treatment is needed at all events.
