History

Behind the HARTMANN GROUP is a long history of people and their ideas. The therapeutic practice of medical professions is unimaginable without dressing materials and hygiene products as well as plant-based drugs. That explains why our history is so closely connected with medical advances and why ideas gained from practical experience are so significant for the company.

Milestones in company history

The "Paul Hartmann Verband-
stoff-Fabrik" (dressing mate-
rial factory) already had seve-
ral European locations at the
beginning of the 20th century.
Founded almost 190 years ago, few health-care companies can boast such a long history as can HARTMANN. It is a history of outstanding minds and ideas. At any time, there have been dedicated partners from the fields of medicine who have helped initiate product developments and tested the products in practice.

People who wrote medical history

"Lister's Carbolated Spray"
marked the beginning of sur-
gery under aseptic conditions
Two people made substantial contributions to the establilshment of the industrial production of dressing material: Victor von Bruns succeeded in removing grease from cotton wool to make it more absorbent of liquids, and Sir Joseph Lister invented the antiseptic wound dressing. It was already in 1873, that the „Paul Hartmann“ dressing material factory used the technique developed by Bruns in the production of absorbent cotton wool. It was one year later, that Paul Hartmann Sr. received information from Sir Lister containing instructions about the method of producing the "Lister's carbolated gauze".
