An efficient group-wide HSE organisation structure is the basis for responsible company management. Motivated and qualified staff members contribute to implementing such a structure within the company. The HARTMANN GROUP aims to systematically promote this, thus fostering staff identification with the company and boosting both commitment and performance. As a result, positive effects are to be expected, not only in the field of HSE, but also with regard to overall processes.
Organisational structure
The HARTMANN GROUP’s Board of Management has complete responsibility for HSE activities; it decides on policy with regard to organization and determines objectives and minimum requirements. The Corporate HSE Management Department acts in a supervisory and advisory capacity here, as well as producing directives on procedure for the safety and environment units, devising training programmes and conducting training courses and seminars. The department also assists the various sites in assessing, implementing, documenting and communicating legal requirements in the field of HSE and in drawing up and implementing resource-saving concepts.
At regional, national and local level, responsibility is delegated to the relevant senior management, then to the managing director, factory manager or head of logistics at the site in question. Site management is responsible for implementing the HSE requirements and putting in place a local HSE unit. Amongst other things, this includes guaranteeing management of emergencies and commissioning safety, environmental and fire protection officers.
HSE Communication
The HARTMANN GROUP believes in conducting an open information and communication policy in respect of safety and environmental protection considerations. This is the only way to motivate staff and win the trust of customers, suppliers, authorities and the general public.
HSE Intranet
In order to meet our staff’s information needs the HARTMANN GROUP has set up an information and communication system on the Intranet. The homepage is regularly updated and revised and is accessible not only to specialists but also to any staff interested. The service is widely used with over 1,000 interested parties per month visiting the homepage regularly.
Training programme
Since 2002 we have been helping to develop the skills of our HSE and management specialists by offering practice-oriented training events.
To this end we conduct three blocks of seminars per year on the subjects of safety in the workplace, fire protection and environmental protection. The seminars also address current specialist topics. For example, at the fire protection seminar we were able to share in the hands-on evacuation experience of the officers in Düsseldorf Airport’s “Air Safety and Emergency Planning Department” and adapt their know-how to the specific requirements of the HARTMANN sites.
On average, 40 to 50 HARTMANN GROUP employees take part in these events, receiving a certificate upon successful completion of the course. Anonymously conducted appraisals of these courses have shown that they are well received by participants and that to date they have all been rated good or even very good
