Compression stockings: tips for putting them on

When putting on compression stockings it is important to ensure that the heel portion fits properly and to smooth out any wrinkles. This enhances wearing comfort and prevents pressure sores.

Compression stockings are best put on immediately after getting up when the legs are not yet swollen. The stocking should be turned inside out down to the foot. The foot opening is then stretched with both hands and the foot portion is pulled over the foot to the instep.

It is essential that the heel portion fits well, including the seams, to prevent pressure sores

Because nothing is more unpleasant than wearing stockings that pinch all day. If the heel portion fits perfectly, the remaining part of the stocking should be pulled up evenly with the thumb in the inner part of the stocking. If wrinkles occur when the stocking is being put on, they should be smoothed out.

Congested stockings material should always be distributed toward the calf

If too much stocking material bundles up in the hollow of the knee, it should be patted toward the calf to prevent excessive pressure. Also, if the stocking is overstretched when it is put on and too long on the thigh, patting toward the calf is appropriate. In this way excess material cannot slip back into the hollow of the knee when moving. Modern compression stockings are easy to use and easy to put on.

To sum up: only properly applied compression stockings provide optimal wearing comfort.
